WordHustler is the collaborative brainchild of John L. Singleton and Anne Walls: two writers, dreamers, and cultural insurgents. We’re not some fly-by-night, business-suit-wearing mucky mucks who want to swindle your hard-earned loot out of your wallet. We’re a pair of writers who, in the year 2008, couldn’t believe this was how we were still doing submissions. Writing is the oldest form of expression….paper cuts and the taste of envelopes is NOT.
Though technology is evolving at a breakneck speed, the tools of writing are still surprisingly primitive compared to AVID editing systems and applications like PhotoShop. Things got so bad that a writer who had retired from programming (that would be John) decided to put his writing on hold to do something about this. Another writer who was busy writing and directing short films (Anne, obs) put her films aside to join him, both determined to make things better, not just for ourselves, but for writers everywhere.
So we made WordHustler. For you. And us…two writers, sick to death of dealing with the chaos and ready for something easy, effective, and cheap enough to be utilized by everyone. Our mission is to integrate our innovative, friendly, smart software into your writing life. No more outdated databases and costly trips to Kinkos.
We want WordHustler to evolve into a cultural experience, a collective consciousness, a place your brilliance not only passes through, but also a source of inspiration. We appreciate your interest in joining the WordHustler team. We’re all in this together.
At WordHustler, our philosophy is to be as open-and as transparent-as possible. We have no desire to become the writing market overlord of the Internet, nor exclude writers from reaching their dreams because we’d like to have say, a 1969 TransAM. (Black, tan interior, with the t-tops in case anyone is feeling generous.) For this reason we:
The most important part of writing is getting the words on the paper. WordHustler takes care of everything else so you can do just that. Hustle on!

Yes. We do not and will never charge for our listings. We simply trust that you will find our submission services indispensible to your writing career and use them. If not, you’re still free to browse our listings while you are a member of WordHustler.
Not a problem. One of the best things about WordHustler is that we are the first company in the world to integrate literary market listings with a submission service. If you can’t find the market you’re looking for—or maybe you just want to send yourself a copy of a manuscript—simply log in and click “Send Work” in the top site navigation. From there you can manually enter the address you’d like to send your work to. Of course, you can always just email us and ask us to add the market. As long as the market is a valid opportunity for writers, we’re glad to list it on WordHustler, free of charge.
Yep. Our SASEs are standard white #10 envelopes, addressed to you. Or, if you use VirtualOffice, they are addressed to your VirtualOffice mailbox at WordHustler.
Yes. We don't tack on any fees during checkout.
We ship your submission using standard mailing supplies, just as if you’d done it yourself. For submissions under 5 pages, we send your manuscript in a 6x9 manila clasp envelope. For larger submissions, we use 9x12 manila clasp envelopes. All of our mailer pieces get professional thermal-printed shipping labels, which are bar coded to ensure that the USPS routes your submission quickly and accurately. And of course, our SASEs are white #10 envelopes.
You can see both our SASEs and our ReplyCards in the gallery, below.
No. We’re not an agency and exist only to help you get your work out into the world. When you hit it big we simply ask that you remember the little people who helped get your brilliance out into the world by telling us about your success! Send an email to press@wordhustler.com to share your stories with us!
Currently WordHustler accepts files that are in PDF format only. PDF is the de facto standard for file exchange in the publishing world and it ensures that we print your manuscripts exactly as you intended.
Some markets require an entry form. For example, many of our contests require that you complete a separate entry form, in addition to sending your submission. When a market has an entry form, you are automatically prompted to use our Advanced Submission Wizard. The Advanced Submission Wizard is a tool we’ve developed here at WordHustler labs that allows you to handle almost any submission situation. The Advanced Submission Wizard will allow you to:
If the market you are submitting to requires an entry form, the Advanced Submission Wizard will prompt you for the information needed to complete the entry form. When you add the submission to your Queue, you will then have a chance to download and review your submission, entry form and all. Please be sure to check it for accuracy before proceeding to checkout.
If a market requires entry fees, you may include them by filling out the field, “Additional Fees” when adding your submission. However, in many cases this value will be pre-filled for you. Please read the contest details carefully, as many contests require different entry fees, depending on the period the submission is received.
WordHustler’s preferred method for making sure your manuscript gets to its destination safe and sound is to use our ReplyCard service. ReplyCards are small, postage-included, postcards that can be included with your submission for just $1.29. Usually, when a market receives your manuscript, they will open it and put the reply card back in the mail. Sometimes though, you won’t hear back from a market for an extended period of time so WordHustler takes as many steps as possible to make sure this is not a common occurrence. We are in constant contact with our markets, checking and re-checking their Reply Card policies. Also, we attach a clearly-marked sticker on the outside of your submission envelope calling the market’s attention to the fact that there is sensitive material inside the envelope that needs immediate attention.
If you need help, you should try reading our support pages, located at http://support.wordhustler.com. If you can’t find the answer to your question there, simply send an email to support@wordhustler.com. We try to respond to all support inquires within 24 hours.
You can find out more information about listing your market on WordHustler by visiting our market affiliates page, here.
WordHustler can help contest organizers streamline submissions in three ways:
Absolutely! Simply log into your account and click “Send Work.” From there you can enter any address—including your own.
We send out exactly what the market requests. In general, screenplays sent through WordHustler are printed on high-quality 20 pound paper, and bound with sturdy Acco #5 brass brads or (depending on stock) the same steel brads used by movie studios like Paramount. If a market requests cover stock, we do that too. We add professional white cover stock at no extra cost.
Glad you asked! WordHustler can help you submit your work digitally to agents, publishers, publications and more with our brand new Digital Submission Service (http://www.wordhustler.com/myaccount/digital). For only $5.99/month, you can find markets and email contact info, submit your work via your own email address, and have everything tracked in your WordHustler Dashboard. To get started, simply go into your "My Account" page and click on the blue "Digital Submission Membership" link and sign up for the system.
