| Whiting Writers Awards | Updated November 17th, 2008 |
The MRS. GILES WHITING FOUNDATION is dedicated to the support of the humanities and of creative writing. Since 1985, the Foundation has supported creative writing through the Whiting Writers Awards which are given annually to ten emerging writers in fiction, nonfiction, poetry and plays. The awards are based on accomplishment and promise. Candidates are proposed by nominators from across the country whose experience and vocations bring them in contact with individuals of extraordinary talent. Winners are chosen by a selection committee, a small group of recognized writers, literary scholars, and editors, appointed annually by the Foundation. Both nominators and selectors serve anonymously. The Foundation does not accept applications to the Writers' Program. The Whiting Writers’ Awards are intended for emerging writers. We hope to identify exceptional new writers who have yet to make their mark in the literary culture. The award is highly competitive. Up to ten awards will be made from approximately 90 to 100 nominations. Nominators are literary professionals across the country representing all literary genres who are likely to know about emerging writers at the beginning of promising careers. The majority are writers, often teachers as well, and the list has included editors, agents, critics, bookstore owners, reading series organizers, dramaturgs, and artistic directors of theaters. Nominators are contacted by the foundation and are each asked to nominate one emerging writer of exceptional talent and promise. The roster of nominators changes annually, although some nominators have served more than once. send: Complete MS looking for: Any specifically: Literary |

The Committee on Honors and Awards of the Modern Language Association invites authors to compete for the eighteenth annual Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize for an outstanding book published in English in the field of Latin American and Spanish literatures and cultures. The International Reading Association’s Albert J. Harris Award recognizes outstanding published works focused on the identification, prevention, assessment, or instruction of learners experiencing difficulty learning to read or write. Publications that have appeared in a refereed professional journal between January 2007 and December 2007 are eligible for consideration by the Research Publication Committee. Eligible works include reports of empirical studies that involve the collection of original data and/or articles that develop theory or synthesize knowledge. In addition to the $1,000 monetary award, the author(s) of the selected work will receive recognition at the Research Awards Luncheon of the Reading Research Conference on Saturday, May 2, 2009 in Minneapolis, Minnesota (one day prior to the International Reading Association’s Annual Convention). The selected author (s) will be notified of this information in January 2009. The following criteria will guide the nomination and selection process: 1. The degree to which the work extends current understanding of the prevention, assessment or instruction of learners struggling to read or write. 2. In the case of works that are based on existing data, the application of explicit and rigorous criteria for selecting, analyzing, and synthesizing evidence and the appropriateness of related conclusions. 3. In the case of theory development, theory that is soundly grounded in research. 5. Clarity of writing. A subcommittee of the International Reading Association Research Publications Awards will conduct a systematic review of professional journals, resulting in nomination of eligible works. In addition, articles may be nominated by researchers, authors and others.
