We're looking for fiction that's bold, brilliant...but brief. Send us your best in 1,500 words or fewer. But don't be too long about it—the deadline is December 1, 2008. First Place: $3,000 Second Place: $1,500 Third Place: $500 The First-Place winner has the option of a FREE "Best Seller Publishing Package" from Trafford Publishing, a leading provider of book-publishing services. Winners' names will appear in the May/June 2009 issue of Writer's Digest magazine. Send entry form, short story, payment, and SASE. Enclose a self-addressed, stamped postcard with your entry if you want to be notified of its receipt. Entries outside the word limitation will be disregarded. Type the word count on the first page of your entry along with your name, address, phone number and email address. The entry fee is $12 per manuscript. You may enter as many manuscripts as you wish. New South publishes quality literary art promoting the work of emerging and established writers. New South holds no subject biases. The staff will select the best work regardless of style or genre. Two prizes, one in Fiction and the other in Poetry will be awarded to a US writer. Fiction Prize First Place: $1000 Second Place: $250 Deadline: All entries must be postmarked by March 4, 2008 Reading Fee: $15.00 per entry Each entry must include the following: • A check or money order (NO CASH) made payable to GSU (or Georgia State University) for fifteen dollars ($15). Entry fee includes a copy of the Spring / Summer 2008 issue, which will contain the winning entries. • A cover letter with a 3 to 4-line bio, title(s) of the work submitted, and your name, mailing address, phone number, and email address. • SASE for result notification. The University of North Texas Press announces the 2009 Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Short Fiction. The winner of this annual award will receive $1000 and publication by UNT Press. Entries will be judged by an eminent writer. Entries can be a combination of short-shorts, short stories, and novellas, from 100 to 200 book pages in length (word count between 27,500 and 50,000). Material should be previously unpublished in book form. Please include two cover sheets: one with title only, and one with title, your name, address, e-mail, phone, and acknowledgment of any previously published material. Your name should not appear anywhere on the manuscript except on the one cover page. Manuscripts for the 2009 award should be postmarked between July 1 and August 29, 2008. The winning manuscript will be announced in January 2009. The Calvino Prize is an annual fiction competition sponsored by the Creative Writing Program in the English Department of the University of Louisville. They will be awarded to outstanding pieces of fiction in the fabulist experimentalist style of Italo Calvino. Please note that these prizes are meant to encourage experimental writing, in the mode of Calvino, and are not meant to encourage merely imitative work. First Place: $1000 and Publication Second Place: $300 The first place entry will be published in the Salt Hill Journal of Syracuse University. Further, the winner will be invited to read the winning entry, all expenses paid, at the Twentieth Century Literature Conference held at the University of Louisville every February. The 15 finalists will be posted on the website Submit up to 25 industry standard (double-spaced, 12-point font, pages numbered) pages of a novel, novella, short story, or short collection. Entries which use a smaller font or are single-spaced in order to make a longer work appear to be only 25 pages will be trimmed to approximately 25 industry standard pages. Work previously published is eligible and simultaneous submissions are accepted. An except from a larger work is allowed; however, remember that the selection will be judged on its own merit and so should be able to stand on its own. Please submit TWO copies of your submission bound by a paper clip, binder, or single staple. DO NOT USE MULTIPLE STAPLES. The author's name should not appear on the work. All entries will be read anonymously. Please send two cover pages: one listing only the title of the manuscript; the other listing the title, author's name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address. Please do not send publication history of the author. Deadline: October 15, 2008. Winner announced December 15, 2008. The entry fee is $25 and should be made payable to: The University of Louisville.
