| French-American Foundation Translation Prizes | Updated October 14th, 2008 |

The Florence Gould Foundation and the French-American Foundation are currently accepting submissions for their Annual Translation Prizes. This year the foundation will present a $10 000 cash award for the best English translation of French in both fiction and non-fiction. Translations for consideration must have been published for the first time in the United States between January 1 and December 31, 2008 and must be submitted, accompanied by the French original work by November 15, 2008 (one French copy and one English copy). All categories of work are eligible in fiction and non fiction, with the exception of technical, scientific and reference works, and children's literature. The prizes will be announced and presented in the spring of 2009. Each submissions must be sent with the the corresponding submission form with updated information for both Editorial and Publicity Departments for French and American publishers/editors and for the translator. The Mary McCarthy Prize in Short Fiction includes a $2,000 cash award, publication of a collection of short stories, novellas, or a short novel, and a standard royalty contract. Also, please note entry fee ($25). Contest is open to any writer of English who is a citizen of the United States. Employees and board members of Sarabande Books, Inc. are not eligible. Submissions may include a collection of short stories, one or more novellas, or a short novel. All manuscripts are required to be a minimum of 150 pages and are not to exceed 250 pages. Works that have previously appeared in magazines or in anthologies may be included. Translations and previously self-published collections are not eligible. To avoid conflict of interest, students in a degree-granting program or close friends of a judge are ineligible to enter the contest in the genre for which their friend or teacher is serving as judge. Please submit one copy of the manuscript and required entry form. Manuscript must be: Anonymous—the author's name or address must not appear anywhere on the manuscript (your title page should contain the title only). Between 150-250 pages. Typed on standard white paper, one side of the page only. Paginated consecutively with a table of contents and acknowledgements page (a list of publications in which stories or sections of the manuscript appeared). Bound with a spring clip or placed in a plain file folder. No paper clips or staples, please. Also, please keep the following in mind: Retain a copy of your manuscript. Cannot return manuscripts.Submission of more that one manuscript is permissible if each manuscript is accompanied by an entry form and handling fee. Once submitted, manuscripts cannot be altered. Winner will be given the opportunity to make changes before publication. Simultaneous submissions to other publishers are permitted, but Sarabande Books must be notified immediately if manuscript is accepted elsewhere. Finalists will be asked to send additional copies of the work. Winner will be notified in early July. Sarabande Books will consider all finalists for publication. All manuscripts must be accompanied by our entry form which contains all the necessary identifying information. Do not send your manuscript without this form. There is a $25 handling fee, check made payable to Sarabande Books, Inc. Manuscripts must be postmarked between and including January 1 and February 15. Since 1931, the California Book Awards have honored the exceptional literary merit of California writers and publishers. Each year a select jury considers hundreds of books in search of the very best in literary achievement. Eligible books must be written while the author is a resident of California, and they must be published during the year under consideration. Awards are presented in the categories of Fiction, Nonfiction, First Work of Fiction, Poetry, Californiana, Notable Contribution to Publishing, Juvenile Literature and Young Adult Literature. Authors and Publishers are invited to submit an entry or entries to the Annual California Book Awards of The Commonwealth Club. Awards are presented to those books with exceptional literary merit. Each entry must bear a 2008 publication date and be made on an official form, or a facsimile thereof, and must be postmarked not later than midnight December 19, 2008. Earlier entries are appreciated. Each submission must have a completed entry form (paper or digital on-line form) and must be postmarked no later than December 19th, 2008. Entries are restricted to books bearing a 2008 original publication date. The author must have been a legal resident of California at the time the manuscript was accepted for publication. To be eligible for an award in Notable Contribution to Publishing, the author must be a California resident (as stipulated above) or the publisher can be recognized the applicant, provided the publisher is California-based. There is no entry fee. Either author or publisher may submit entries. At least six (6) review copies of each work must be sent to our San Francisco office. Your submission is considered complete once both the review copies and an entry form are received. Awards will consist of three gold and up to eight silver medals: One Gold Medal in Fiction; One Gold Medal in Nonfiction; One Gold Medal in Poetry; One Silver Medal for an author’s published First Work of Fiction; One Silver Medal for Juvenile Literature, up to age 10; One Silver Medal for Young Adult Literature, ages 11-16; One Silver Medal for Californiana (fiction or nonfiction relating to California); One Silver Medal for Notable Contribution to Publishing (outstanding book production); Two Silver Medals for outstanding entries, regardless of classification. Three prizes of $1,000 each and a standard royalty contract are given annually for book-length manuscripts of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction by emerging writers. The winning works will be published by New Rivers Press and distributed nationally through Consortium. This year, the prize in prose is only open to writers who reside in Minnesota or New York City; the prizes in poetry are open to all U.S. writers. The Serena McDonald Kennedy Award holds a literary award for the best short story or novella. No more than 50,000 word novella or 200 page manuscript of short stories will be accepted. The Department of English at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and GRASSROOTS, SIUC's undergraduate literary magazine, are pleased to announce the 2008 Devil's Kitchen Reading Awards. One book of poetry and one book of prose (novel, short fiction, or literary nonfiction) will be selected from submissions of titles published in 2007, and the winning authors will receive an honorarium of $1000 and will present a public reading and participate in panels at the Devil's Kitchen Fall Literary Festival at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. The dates for the 2008 festival are yet to be determined, but usually takes place in late October/early November. Travel and accommodations will be provided for the two winners. Entries may be submitted by either author or publisher, and must include a copy of the book, a cover letter, a brief biography of the author including previous publications, and a $15.00 entry fee made out to "SIUC - Dept. of English." Entries must be postmarked December 1, 2007 - February 1, 2008. Materials postmarked after February 1 will be returned unopened. Because we cannot guarantee their return, all entries will become the property of the SIUC Department of English. Entrants wishing acknowledgment of receipt of materials must include a self-addressed stamped postcard. Judges will come from the faculty of SIUC's MFA Program in Creative Writing and the award winners will be selected by the staff of GRASSROOTS. The winners will be notified in May 2008. All entrants will be notified of the results in June 2008. The awards are open to single-author titles published in 2007 by independent, university, or commercial publishers. The winners must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must agree to attend and participate in the 2008 Devil's Kitchen Fall Literary Festival to receive the award. The University of North Texas Press announces the 2009 Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Short Fiction. The winner of this annual award will receive $1000 and publication by UNT Press. Entries will be judged by an eminent writer. Entries can be a combination of short-shorts, short stories, and novellas, from 100 to 200 book pages in length (word count between 27,500 and 50,000). Material should be previously unpublished in book form. Please include two cover sheets: one with title only, and one with title, your name, address, e-mail, phone, and acknowledgment of any previously published material. Your name should not appear anywhere on the manuscript except on the one cover page. Manuscripts for the 2009 award should be postmarked between July 1 and August 29, 2008. The winning manuscript will be announced in January 2009.
