Summer Literary Seminars (SLS: www.sumlitsem.org) is announcing its annual 2009 unified (SLS-Italy, Lithuania, Kenya) literary contest, held this year in affiliation with Fence Magazine. Contest winners in the categories of fiction and poetry will have their work published in Fence (an established literary journal), as well as the participating literary journals in Canada, Russia, Kenya, Italy, and Lithuania. Additionally, they will have the choice of attending (airfare, tuition, and housing included) any one of the SLS-09 programs – in Vasto, Abruzzo, Italy (May 15-30); Vilnius-Nida, Lithuania (July 20-August 4); or Nairobi-Lamu, Kenya (December). Contest Deadline: February 28, 2009. Poetry Judge: Ann Lauterbach Second-place winners will receive a full tuition waiver for the program of their choice, and third-place winners will receive a 50% tuition discount. A number of select contest participants, based on the overall strength of their work, will be offered tuition scholarships, as well, applicable to the SLS-09 programs. Reading fee: $15 US. No more than three poems per entry. Only previously unpublished work can be submitted. The contest is open to writers worldwide; poems must be written in English. POSTMARK DEADLINE: August 1st, 2008 An entry fee of $16.00 includes a one year subscription to RATTLE (or a one-year extension for subscribers). Submissions will be judged in a blind review by the editors of RATTLE: Type or print clearly your name, address, email address, phone number, and the titles of the poems onto a coversheet. No contact information should appear on the poems. Include a check or money order for $16.00, payable to RATTLE. Send no more than four poems per entry. There is no line-limit; poems can be any length. Multiple entries by a single poet are accepted, however each group of four poems must be treated as a separate entry, each with its own cover sheet and $16 entry fee. RATTLE's winter issue (Dec. 2008) must be a potential first publication for all works submitted. No previously published works, or works accepted for publication elsewhere. No simultaneous submissions, except to magazines or presses open to publishing reprints after January 1st, 2009. Winners will be announced no later than September 15th, 2008, and those poems will be published in the Winter 2008 issue of RATTLE. Crazyhorse publishes the entire spectrum of today’s fiction, essays, and poetry—from the mainstream to the avant-garde, from the established to the undiscovered writer. Each year Crazyhorse offers the Crazyhorse Lynda Hull Memorial Poetry Prize for a single poem. The competition is open, the prize awards are currently $2000 and the winning piece of poetry is published in Crazyhorse. More than one manuscript may be entered. For each poetry manuscript entered, please include the following reading fee, which includes a one-year/two-issue subscription to Crazyhorse: $16 per manuscript for new entrants, $14 per manuscript if you have entered the Crazyhorse prizes before. For each additional poem entered and entry fee paid, your subscription to Crazyhorse will extend by one year/two issues. Please mail manuscripts and entry fee payment by Dec. 16, 2008. Winner will receive $2000, Publication by Fordham University Press and a Reading/Book Launch in the Poets Out Loud Reading Series 2007-2008 Prize Judge: Michael Palmer MANUSCRIPT GUIDELINES - Manuscripts must be previously unpublished, original and in English (no translation) - Manuscripts must be typed; stapled, clipped or bound; pages numbered - Length: 50-80 pages - Submit ONE copy of the manuscript - Manuscripts must have two title pages: one that includes the poet's name and address, and one that includes the title of the manuscript only - The poet's name should appear ONLY on the first title page - Include table of contents and list of acknowledgments - Manuscripts must be postmarked between September 1 and November 15. Elixir Press is sponsoring a poetry contest open to all poets writing in English. There will be a Judge's Prize of $2,000 and an Editors' Prize of $1,000. Both winning manuscripts will be published by Elixir Press. All entries will be considered for publication. An outside judge, to be announced later, will make the final decision for the first prize. The editors will make the final decision for the second prize. Manuscripts should be typed on one side of the page only and on standard paper. No dot matrix unless letter quality. Send a business size SASE for reply only; manuscripts cannot be returned. An SAS postcard for receipt of the manuscript is optional. Please use a 12 to 14 point font. Do not send the only copy of your manuscript. Do not send biographical material, photographs, CDs, videos, or illustrations. Enclose a cover sheet stating the name of the manuscript and the author's name, address, and telephone number and a cover sheet with the title alone. Manuscripts must be paginated and include a table of contents and an acknowledgments page if appropriate. Simultaneous submissions are welcome, so long as Elixir is notified immediately if a manuscript is accepted elsewhere. Manuscripts must be at least 48 pages in length. Geared towards established poets. Eligibility: Poets writing in English who have published one or more full-length collections of poetry. Judges will consider individual collections and volumes of new and selected poems. Besides the winner, New Issues may publish as many as three additional manuscripts from this competition. A $20 reading fee must accompany each manuscript. Checks should be made payable to New Issues Poetry & Prose. Please do not bind manuscript. A manila folder or metal clasp will do. Include a brief bio and relevant publication information, cover page with name, address, phone number, and title of the manuscript. Please include a table of contents. Manuscripts will be recycled. Enclose a stamped, self-addressed postcard for notification that the manuscript has been received, or your canceled check may be used as a notification of receipt. For notification of title and author of the winning manuscript, please enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Decisions will be announced in January or February of 2009. A manuscript may be submitted that is being considered elsewhere but New Issues should be notified upon the manuscript's acceptance elsewhere.
