The Kiriyama Prize was established in 1996 to recognize outstanding books about the Pacific Rim and South Asia that encourage greater mutual understanding of and among the peoples and nations of this vast and culturally diverse region. The Prize consists of a cash award of US $30,000, which is split equally between the fiction and nonfiction winners. Beginning in 2008, if a work in translation is chosen as a winner in either category, the translator will receive $5,000 and the winning author $10,000. The purpose of the Kiriyama Prize is to promote outstanding books that will contribute to greater understanding of and among the peoples and nations of the Pacific Rim and South Asia. Therefore, to be eligible for the Prize, a book must relate in some significant way to the Pacific Rim or South Asia, to a particular culture or part(s) of these regions, or to people from these regions. The Prize is awarded in two categories: fiction and nonfiction. To be eligible, books submitted must be published in English. They may be works originally written in English OR translations from any other language into English. Only the first, published, English translation of any work is eligible. If a book has been published previously in English, subsequent translations are ineligible. Books submitted must be published in printed form for general commercial release. Self-published books are not eligible. Eligible books must be published in Canada and/or the United States. They may have been published in another country or countries previously. The first US and Canadian editions of the book in English must have been published during the 2007 calendar year. Looking for complete short stories, written in English, fitting into the broad category of speculative fiction. Send short story, entry form, payment, and SASE. Stories must be specified as one of the following: a) Science Fiction: ($1,000.00 prize) Must have some integral element of a scientific nature b) Fantasy ($1,000.00 prize) Any departure from generally accepted limits of present or past reality c) Humor or Horror ($1,000.00 prize) Any speculative fiction grounded in humor or horror. d) Alaskana ($1,000.00 prize) Any speculative fiction with an Alaskan theme or integrated setting. Merely placing the story in Anchorage, if the setting is not integral to the story, will not qualify the entry as Alaskana. Some unique aspect of life in Alaska must be an integral element of story. e) Young adult ($1,000.00 prize) Speculative fiction, which might otherwise fall into any of the above categories, written for and appealing particularly to an audience from upper elementary through high-school level. GRAND PRIZE: $5,000 ($4,000 in addition to $1,000 first place prize = $5,000) Only the first 3,000 entries will be accepted. There will be one prize in each category, as indicated, with a grand prize winner chosen from one of the category winners. Books eligible for the Library of Virginia Literary Awards must have been written by a Virginia author or have a Virginia-related theme. A Virginia author is defined as a writer meeting one or more of the following qualifications: a native-born Virginian; an author living in Virginia; an author whose permanent home address is Virginia but who does not at present live in Virginia. The following types of books are not eligible for the awards: reference works, edited works, children's and juvenile literature, photographic books, and "how to" books. Any individual, organization, or company may nominate books to be considered for these awards. Each year's awards honor books written in the previous calendar year. Thus entries for the 2006 awards must have been published and distributed between January 1 and December 31, 2005. The deadline for entries is February 10, 2006. The completed entry form and three copies of the book (nonreturnable) must be on hand prior to that date. Entries will be forwarded to judges on receipt, so please enter as soon as possible.
