grant amount: $25,000, Deadline is December 31st, 2008

The Academy of American Poets is pleased to announce the competition for the 2009 Raiziss/de Palchi Fellowship for the translation of modern Italian poetry. The fellowship, which is awarded every other year, is given to enable an American translator to travel, study, or otherwise advance a significant work-in-progress. The Academy invites applications from American translators currently engaged in the translation of twentieth-century Italian poetry. Applications must be postmarked between September 1 and December 31, 2008. A panel of judges will select the recipient of the fellowship. The winning translator will receive an award of $25,000 and a six week residency at the American Academy in Rome. The judges for this year will be announced in August.

To apply, a translator must submit four copies of a proposal describing the work-in-progress, the applicant's credentials, and how the fellowship money will be used. Applications should be no longer than five pages double-spaced. The applicant must verify that he or she has obtained permission to translate the poems specified in his or her application or that the poems are in the public domain. The translator must submit 15 sample pages of the translation in progress as well as copies of the original poems. Each application must be accompanied by a completed entry form signifying the applicant's acceptance of these guidelines.

The decision of the judges is expected by March 2009. The Academy will award the winning translator a fellowship of $25,000. The fellowship winner will also receive a six-week residency at the American Academy in Rome to establish residency dates which fall in May, June, or July of 2009.

grant amount: $70,000, Deadline is October 01st, 2008

The deadline for individual applications in the creative arts, humanities, and social sciences is October 1, 2008.

Former fellows of the Radcliffe Institute Fellowship Program (1999 to present) are not eligible to apply.

Each application is reviewed in a dual-tiered process by peers in relevant disciplines. Applications are judged on the quality and significance of the proposed project and the applicant's record of achievement and promise. Applicants are notified of the results of the selection process in early March.

Terms and Conditions

Stipends are funded up to $70,000 for one year with additional funds for project expenses. Some support for relocation expenses is provided where relevant. If so directed, Radcliffe will pay the stipend to the fellow's home institution.

Fellows receive office or studio space and access to libraries and other resources of Harvard University during the fellowship year, which extends from early September 2009 through June 30, 2010. Fellows are expected to be free of their regular commitments so they may devote themselves full time to the work outlined in their proposal. Since this is a residential fellowship, we expect fellows to reside in the Boston area during that period and to have their primary office at the Institute so that they can participate fully in the life of the community.

To be considered for a fellowship in fiction or creative nonfiction, applicants must have a contract for publication of a book-length manuscript or at least three shorter works published. Writers who are graduate students at the time of application are not eligible. Submit up to 10 poems, one or two short stories, a recent book chapter, or an essay totaling no more than 30 pages; three letters of reference (sent directly to the institute by the references); a curriculum vitae; and a project proposal by October 1.
