![]() The Arch and Bruce Brown Foundation awards yearly grants to writers in three rotating disciplines: Theatre, Full-length Fiction, and Short Stories. All works submitted must present the gay and lesbian lifestyle in a positive manner and be based on, or inspired by, a historic person, culture, event, or work of art. Writing contests close on November 30th of each year. Grants are $1000 and are not limited to a single winner. 2010 competition is in Short Fiction. The Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation registered in New York State, was formed by playwright/filmmaker Arch Brown in memory of his life-partner of 28 years, Bruce Allen Brown, a pharmaceutical chemist who died of a brain hemorrhage in 1993. Submissions may include Short Stories, One-act Plays or short film or video projects. One work per author. All works submitted must be unpublished, original, and in English. All works selected by the judges will be announced the following May and will receive a cash award of $1,000 (not limited to a single winner). All submissions must be postmarked by midnight November 30, 2010. All manuscripts should be neatly typed on one side of the sheet only. The first page of the manuscript should include the title, your name, mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address. ![]() The University of North Texas Press announces the 2009 Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Short Fiction. The winner of this annual award will receive $1000 and publication by UNT Press. Entries will be judged by an eminent writer. Entries can be a combination of short-shorts, short stories, and novellas, from 100 to 200 book pages in length (word count between 27,500 and 50,000). Material should be previously unpublished in book form. Please include two cover sheets: one with title only, and one with title, your name, address, e-mail, phone, and acknowledgment of any previously published material. Your name should not appear anywhere on the manuscript except on the one cover page. Manuscripts for the 2009 award should be postmarked between July 1 and August 29, 2008. The winning manuscript will be announced in January 2009. | Literary Gift of Freedom Grant | Updated November 17th, 2008 |
![]() The 2009 Literary Gift of Freedom Award will be given to an American woman writer who is a U.S. citizen and will be living in the U.S. during the grant period. Because the award is quite substantial, the application process is extensive. Applications must be postmarked on or before October 31, 2008. Acceptable genres for this grant are poetry, playwriting, creative nonfiction, and fiction.
