grant amount: $50,000, No Deadline for this Market

The Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust in New York City has announced the creation of two awards for American playwrights in different stages of their careers.

The Steinberg Distinguished Playwright Award will honor a mid-career playwright whose body of work has already been recognized. With a cash prize of $200,000, it is believed be the largest award to honor American playwriting. The first award recipient will be announced this fall, and the prize will be awarded on a biennial basis thereafter. Beginning in 2009, the Steinberg Emerging Playwrights Award, also to be awarded biennially, will honor two early career playwrights whose professional work shows great promise; each recipient will receive a cash prize of $50,000.

The trust has established an advisory committee of prominent theater professionals to determine the criteria for the awards, nominate playwrights, and select the recipients. The members of the committee are André Bishop, artistic director of Lincoln Center Theater; David Emmes, producing artistic director of South Coast Repertory; Oskar Eustis, artistic director of the Public Theater; Polly K. Carl, producing artistic director of Playwrights Center; Martha Lavey, artistic director of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company; Eduardo Machado, playwright and artistic director of INTAR Theatre; and Marc Masterson, artistic director of the Actors Theatre of Louisville.

There are many different paths writers can follow to get their first foothold in being hired in television. As part of its ongoing commitment to create additional access for writers of diverse backgrounds, CBS' Diversity Institute has launched a different kind of writers program, which highlights one of those paths.

The focus of this six month program is on opening doors: providing opportunities to build relationships with network executives and show runners; to support new and emerging writers in their efforts to improve their craft; and to develop the interpersonal skills necessary to break in and succeed.

The CBS Writers Mentoring Program is not employment and there is no monetary compensation. It is, instead, a structured program of career development, support, and personal access to executives and decision-making processes, with the goal of preparing aspiring writers for later employment opportunities in television.

Eligibility
The primary focus of CBS' Diversity Writers Mentoring Program is to provide access and opportunities for talented and motivated diverse writers with a focus on writers of color. Aspiring diverse writers with a strong desire to write for CBS television series are encouraged to apply. You must be 21 or older to be eligible.

Application Materials
Each submission must be complete in order to be considered. A complete application packet includes:
* Application
* Letter of Interest
* Work Resume or Bio
* Two (2) Writing Samples: one (1) original piece of work which can be a screenplay, a stage play or a short fiction story (no original television pilots will be accepted) and one (1) half hour or hour episode based on a current, primetime television series that aired new episodes on any network or cable channel during the 2006/07 season

Updated November 15th, 2008
grant amount: see below Deadline is March 15th, 2008

Please submit a cover letter indicating your interest in the residence, a curriculum vitae, teaching evaluations and a copy of your published work or works. The deadline for submitting materials for the fall writer-in-residence is March 15. The deadline for submitting materials for the spring poet-in-residence is September 1.

Dr. Richard H. Thornton, 1907 alumnus of Lynchburg College, was a distinguished teacher, writer, and publisher. He became president of Henry Holt and Company publishers and established friendships with such writers as Carl Sandburg, Thomas Wolfe, and Vachel Lindsay. He was both editor and friend to Robert Frost.

Since 1975 the endowment established in his name has made it possible for the Department of English to bring some of the most exciting and successful poets, novelists, dramatists, and nonfiction writers of our time to the College. These writers have taught classes, given readings, and enriched the cultural life of the campus.

Among the writers to appear on campus over the last two decades are Edward Albee, Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, John Knowles, Stephen Spender, Joseph Heller, Alice McDermott, James Baldwin, Cokie Roberts, Nikki Giovanni, Clive Barker, John Barth, Denise Levertov, Ellen Gilchrist, Jay McInerney, Gore Vidal, Tillie Olsen, Jamaica Kincaid, Peter Shaffer, Larry Brown, Jan DeBlieu, Lee Smith, Tobias Wolff, John Gardner, Nora Ephron, and Stanley Plumley.

Each semester a writer comes to the College to teach an eight-week class. To ensure individualized instruction, the class size is limited to fifteen students. Eligibility is determined through submission of sample writings or by recommendation of a student's professor. Any student, regardless of major, can apply.

Students often take more than one Thornton writing course during their four years, and academic credit earned can count toward an English major or toward elective hours, depending on the student's needs.

The visiting writer also gives public readings, conducts other classes at the request of professors, and is available for private conferences with student and faculty writers.

The playwright will also receive health benefits and office space in the suite where the Creative Writing faculty and the other fellows of the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing are housed. During the residency, the fellow will teach one course in playwriting with no more than twelve students.
