About This Market
The American Gardener is a bimonthly magazine and the official publication of the American Horticultural Society, a national, nonprofit, membership organization for gardeners, founded in 1922. The AHS mission is "to open the eyes of all Americans to the vital connection between people and plants, and to inspire all Americans to become responsible caretakers of the earth, to celebrate America's diversity through the art and science of horticulture, and to lead this effort by sharing the society's unique national resources with all Americans.
Feature-length articles include in-depth profiles of individual plant groups; profiles of prominent American horticulturists and gardeners (living and dead); profiles of unusual public or private gardens; descriptions of historical developments in American gardening; descriptions of innovative landscape design projects (especially relating to use of regionally native plants or naturalistic gardening); and descriptions of important plant breeding and research programs tailored to a lay audience. Runs a few how-to articles; these should address relatively complex or unusual topics that most other gardening magazines won't tackle—photography must be provided.
Columns include Conservationist's Notebook (plant conservation) and Natural Connections (natural phenomenon).
The majority of American Gardener readers are advanced, passionate amateur gardeners; about 20% are horticultural professionals. Most prefer not to use synthetic chemical pesticides. Articles are intended to bring this knowledgeable group new information, ranging from the latest scientific findings that affect plants, to in-depth profiles of specific plant groups, and the history of gardening and gardens in America.
