Only interested in treasures that can be found with metal detectors. Queries welcome but not required. If writing about famous treasures and lost mines, be sure Treasure Cache hasn't used the selected topic recently—the story must have a new slant or new information. Source documentation required. How-tos should cover some aspect of treasure hunting and how-to steps should be clearly defined. Treasure Cache will help the author with the sidebar telling how to search for the cache in the story. Articles should coordinate with theme issues when possible.

Northwest Coast is always on the lookout for new, skilled freelancers interested in writing about the greater Columbia-Pacific region. Northwest Coast is seeking quality, non-fiction stories that are fresh, insightful, and easy to read.

Feature Articles (1500-3000 words) are the centerpiece of the magazine. Usually three or four features appear per issue. Freelance submissions will be judged on their quality, thoroughness, and originality. Send query. Payment, $200-$450.

Featurettes (600-1500 words) are snapshots of some particular person, place, or thing on the Northwest Coast and may appear in any section of the magazine from Nature to Food to History. The potential range of topics is vast, but make sure the writing is fresh and lively. Please submit complete manuscripts. Payment, $100-$200.

Off The Shelf (1200-1500 words) is a section that highlights a classic work (fiction or non-fiction) from the Northwest literary canon that inspires you. As the title suggests, the aim of the review is to get the book “off the shelf” and back into the hands of the reading public. Please submit complete manuscripts. Payment, $200.

New Moon is a bimonthly magazine for girls ages 8-14. In general, all material should be pro-girl and feature girls and women as the primary focus. New Moon is for every girl who wants her voice heard and her dreams taken seriously. New Moon celebrates girls, explores the passage from girl to woman, and builds healthy resistance to gender inequities. The New Moon girl is true to herself and New moon helps her as she pursues her unique path in life, moving confidently into the world.

Non-fiction submissions can include humorous articles, inspirational pieces, interviews and/or profiles, personal experience essays from girls, religious topics, travel, international cultures, etc. Columns include "Women's Work" (profiles of women and their jobs) and Herstory (historical women).

Adult writers new to New Moon are encouraged to submit Herstory articles about less well-known women from all over the world, especially if it relates to one of our themes. Same with Women's Work articles. Girls can break in with essays and articles (non-fiction) that relate to a theme.

Would like to see more girl-written feature articles that relate to a theme. These can be about anything the girl has done personally, or she can write about something she's studied. Read New Moon before submitting to get a sense of the style. Writers and artists who comprehend the magazine's goals have the best chance of publication. Loves creative articles—both non-fiction and fiction—that are not condescending to readers. Keep articles to suggested word lengths; avoid stereotypes.

Buys 20 articles/year; 10 columns/year. Query with clips or send complete manuscript.

FamilyFun, the country's number one family magazine, is about all the great things families can do together. Magazine is the family expert on travel, food, crafts, parties, holidays, games, activities, and products--all the essentials that enrich the important time parents and children share.

Queries should describe the content, structure, and tone of the proposed article. Editors receive many queries on the same topics, so please be as specific as possible about what makes your idea unique and why you are qualified to write about it. If appropriate, include photographs or sketches of the finished project, food, or craft. Due to the large volume of submissions, allow four to six weeks for a response. Please note: Editorial responses to submissions will be sent via e-mail, so please provide an address for reply.

FamilyFun does not publish child development articles, fiction, poetry, and the like. Articles are scheduled and assigned at least five months in advance of publication. Family Fun does not accept unsolicited manuscripts for feature stories; but they DO accept unsolicited manuscripts for the following departments: (NOTE: MANUALLY ADDRESS YOUR QUERY TO THE APPROPRIATE EDITOR)

- Everyday Fun: Everyday Fun offers simple, fun, practical, and inexpensive ideas and projects, including crafts, games, nature activities, learning activities, kid-friendly recipes, outings, and so on.
Length: 50 to 300 words
Compensation: $1.25 per word upon acceptance; $200 for the idea if Editors opt to use a staff writer
Submissions: Manuscripts and queries; direct to Adrienne Stolarz, Associate Editor

- Family Getaways: Family Getaways offers two mid-length (600 to 1,000 words), first-person, process-oriented, and often destination-specific articles every issue. Each article is highly formatted and presents a family travel topic such as a road trip, insider’s city weekend, or themed roundup of attractions or destinations. In addition, the department features a page of brief, newsy, time-sensitive items, including new destinations, great package deals, and season-specific outings geared for weekend getaways. The department ends on a festive note, with a full page of fairs, festivals, and civic and cultural events across the country, delivered in a regional format. Because FamilyFun is budget conscious, rarely covers international travel or expensive American resorts or programs.
Compensation: $1.25 per word upon acceptance ($100 for the idea if Editors opt to use a staff writer)
Submissions: Manuscripts and queries; direct to Travel Editor

- Family Traditions:Family Traditions is a first-person, one-page department that highlights one family’s favorite or most meaningful tradition, such as a Saturday-morning ritual or a neat way to mark milestones. The topics vary but are often seasonal and usually focus on some way in which the tradition has helped shape that family’s identity or brought them closer together. Each tradition should be inspiring, but also practical and universal enough that readers can adapt the idea for themselves. Each article is accompanied by a photograph of the writer and his or her family.
Length: 300 to 500 words
Compensation: $1.25 per word upon acceptance
Submissions: Manuscript or query, but preferably manuscripts; direct to Samuel Mead, Senior Editor

- Creative Solutions: Creative Solutions showcases a practical, innovative idea that the writer used to solve a problem common among families: a game or homemade chart that got the kids excited about doing chores, for instance, or a trick that persuaded reluctant letter writers to keep up their correspondence with Grandpa. Each essay tells the story of how this Great Idea changed or inspired the family.
Length: 800 to 1,000 words
Compensation: $1,250 upon acceptance
Submissions: Queries accepted, manuscripts preferred; direct to Debra Immergut, Senior Editor

Blade Magazine, published monthly, is the world's #1 knife publication, covering all aspects of the industry—knifemaking, how-to's, collecting, legislation and knife rights, and much more.

Pick up several different issues of Blade on newsstands and study them. This should give an idea of what they're after. What they need are stories that are brand new in scope and content. Knives being used for unusual purposes, in adventure settings, etc., are always good. New, state-of-the-art knife designs, steels and other knife materials and how they are made are good. The knife collections of celebrities are good. Stories on how to collect knives, what to collect and why, etc., are good.
