Mothering is a bi-monthly publication with an international readership of more than 250,000.

Our main objective is to be truly helpful, to provide information that empowers our readers to make changes, and supports them in being their own experts. We like articles that have a strong point of view and come from the heart, that are challenging or evocative. We also take pride in publishing well-researched, extensively documented articles. When submitting this type of article, please use only the most updated research, from primary sources. Our choice of articles depends on the other material we have published on the subject, how new the topic is to us, and how unique the presentation is.

We encourage you to send a query if you are unsure of our interest in the topic of your article. A query is a one-page specific description and outline of your article. You can query us on more than one topic at a time.

Please include a brief bionote (1-2 sentences) at the end of your submission, so that we can print it if your article is used.

Specific sections/article types include:

Poetry We publish at least one poem in each issue. Please send us no more than three poems at a time. Please include your name, mailing address, phone number, and email address with your submission. We generally do not print rhyming poetry.

Specific sections/article types include:

The Art of Mothering focuses on the inspirational and spiritual side of nurturing. Here is where we share ideas and philosophies that help us to be the kinds of parents we want to be.

Health explores new approaches to health care for the whole family. We welcome coverage of a wide range of topics, encouraging articles on approaches to common childhood health questions that incorporate integrative medicine.

A Child's World contains articles that reflect the world as a child sees it. In this section, we especially like to feature activities, crafts, arts, music, and stories for children.

Pregnancy, Birth and Midwifery features all aspects of pregnancy and birth as well as actual experiences and stories of childbirth. While we regularly feature homebirth stories, we welcome stories of birth in a variety of settings. We also like to feature stories of freestanding birth centers. We like well-researched articles on the politics of childbirth and how-tos on avoiding unnecessary medical intervention. Inspirational, practical, and advocacy articles are welcome.

Breastfeeding We regularly publish articles on breastfeeding. We like stories of moms overcoming obstacles to breastfeeding, how-to articles on breastfeeding, and breastfeeding advocacy articles.

Ways of Learning features articles on innovative, multidimensional, people-centered approaches to education. This section focuses on how people learn as well as where they learn, and includes learning about traditional subjects as well as subjects usually thought of as outside the realm of education: responsibility, ethics, adventure, travel, intuition, spirituality. We want to know about new, as well as rediscovered "old," ways of learning, with attention to schools and methods that support the full potential of the human child.

Family Living contains informative, general interest stories that share helpful hints, practical suggestions, and insights into the daily realities of parenting.

Peggy's Kitchen is our recipes section. Recent topics include Winter Soups, a toddler cooking class, and holiday-themed recipes. Generally, an introductory block of text of about a thousand words is followed by 5-7 recipes.

Poetry We publish at least one poem in each issue. Please send us no more than three poems at a time.

Quarterly magazine covering the experience of motherhood from a literary angle. For features, new items, and debate essays, please query with clips first.

PERSONAL ESSAYS (800 to 4,500 words): These are the signature pieces of the magazine, the heart and soul of our endeavor. Looking for essays that share certain qualities--specificity and insight primary among them. These pieces should employ illustrative anecdotes, a personal voice, and a down-to-earth tone. Avoid essays that fall back on big concept words--"magic," "joy," "wonder"--to get across the transformative nature of motherhood. Poignancy is fine; sentimentality isn't. Humor is a plus. Important points to remember: Not looking for how-to articles or essays that focus more on the child than on the parent.

FEATURE (3000 to 6000 words): Each issue, Brain, Child devotes space to at least one traditional feature, a piece that relies more heavily on reporting than introspection. Examples of this sort include an in-depth look at the home-schooling movement and an investigation into the frontiers of genetic testing. Open to both New Journalism and old, but high-quality research and reporting are a must. Please query with clips and a one-page story outline.

NUTSHELL (200 to 800 words): Nutshell is the news section, offering both stories you won't find in the mainstream media and unique perspectives on hot topics. Example stories include: a profile of pediatrician whose own children watched three hours of TV a day; a report on a new study of lesbian adoptive mothers; and an interview with a mother whose child left home for college at fourteen. Please query with clips and a pitch.

DEBATE (900 words): Section of friendly fire, where two writers square off on a topic of controversy. Looking for concise, thoughtful words on issues such as sex education, the Barbie question, and whether sleeping with your kids is okay. Brief anecdotes helpful; very strong opinion required. Please query with clips and the issue.

REVIEWS (200 words for mini-reviews; 800-3000 for longer reviews): Reviews new and not-so-new books of fiction, memoir, autobiography, and nonfiction. Short reviews focus on books dealing with family or parenting (no how-to or expert advice manuals). The longer review essays tackle several books on a distinct theme; these essays are thesis-driven rather than a serial review of the works at hand.

PARODY (800 words): The parodies Brain, Child likes most are ones that target people, institutions, or media who don't take mothers seriously. Open to a variety of forms (e.g., narrative, letter, quiz, etc.)--as long as it makes editors laugh.

Payment varies.

Buys 50 mss/year.

Review for Religious welcomes unsolicited manuscripts on topics pertinent to the publication's stated purpose as "a forum for shared reflection on the lived experience of all who find that the church's rich heritages of spirituality support their personal and apostolic Christian lives." The articles in the journal are meant to be informative, practical, inspirational, or historical written from a theological or spiritual or sometimes canonical point of view.

Each manuscript should include a brief personal biography of the author(s) two-to-three line entry and also a two-to-three line synopsis of the article. The editors will use this information in composing the author note and the table-of-contents description.

The book review section of the journal presents a wide coverage of books judged to be of interest to the readership. To allow the editors to include as many reviews as possible, please keep your review brief (400-600 words).

In appraising the book's worth, please do not feel that you must express only favorable observations. Your forthright comments on significant limitations, deficiencies, or errors can be helpful to our readers. While Review hopes that many readers will purchase or borrow and read a book you consider excellent, the editors also hope to caution their readers that particular books are not as enlightening or as inspirational as their titles indicate. Comparing or contrasting this book with another book or two, recent or classic, can add spice to your review and make it more helpful for readers.

The review should be (1) descriptive: giving a glimpse of the content; (2) evaluative: assessing the book's worth; (3) indicative: suggesting which kinds of readers might be drawn to the book.

Review for Religious pays $6 per printed page for one-time right of publication. Four copies of the issue in which the published article appears will be sent to each author. Upon publication all rights revert to the author except for the usual acknowledgment of the article's having been previously published in Review for Religious in the case of any future publication.

All interested persons (religious, clerical or lay) are invited to submit articles for consideration by the editorial board. Authors writing from other Christian and other religious traditions on areas of shared concern are given the same serious consideration as Catholic authors. All authors are requested to include an e-mail address, if one is available for them.

Review for Religious reaches an international audience for whom English is not necessarily a first language, nor are the cultural perspectives and assumptions of the author always immediately understood by the reader. In light of these facts, editorial preference runs to articles that state clearly and concisely the author's ideas with enough development to establish and illustrate the point(s) being made.

Published articles vary in length from 1,500 to 5,000 words (4-15 pages). Authors should make every effort to employ inclusive language and avoid jargon. Use endnotes instead of footnotes. Editors reserve the right to edit manuscripts for grammatical correctness and readability, and for the content's factual and theological accuracy. Each manuscript should include a brief personal biography of the author(s) two-to-three line entry and also a two-to-three line synopsis of the article. The editors will use this information in composing the author note and the table-of-contents description.

Review for Religious pays $6 per printed page for one-time right of publication. Four copies of the issue in which the published article appears will be sent to each author. Upon publication all rights revert to the author except for the usual acknowledgment of the article's having been previously published in Review for Religious in the case of any future publication.
