Zahir is a tri-annual print journal dedicated to publishing the best in speculative fiction by both new and established writers. Each issue features an eclectic mix of literary fantasy, science fiction, magical realism, and stories that are not so easily classified.

Most of the stories we choose lean toward the literary end of the spectrum. The best way to get a feel for what we're after is to read a couple of recent issues or at least read the sample stories online.

Put your name, mailing address, phone number, e-mail address, and an estimated word count at the top of the first page. At the top of all other pages, put your last name, title of story, and page number. At the end of the story, put THE END so we'll know nothing is missing.

Only writers living outside of the US may submit via e-mail.

WEIRD TALES has enjoyed a devoted following for many decades as the very first magazine of gothic fantasy, sci-fi, and horror. Founded in 1923, the pioneering publication introduced the world to such counter-culture icons as Cthulhu the alien monster god and Conan the Barbarian. WEIRD TALES is well known for launching the careers of great authors like H.P. Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury, and Robert E. Howard — hell, Tennessee Williams made his first sale here! — not to mention legendary fantasy artists like Virgil Finlay and Margaret Brundage.

NONFICTION: The "Weirdism" section features third-person journalistic narrative vignettes of 300 to 500 words, written /New Yorker/ "Talk of the Town" style, whose motif is "the weirdness of real life."

FICTION: Short stories of 10,000 words or less (don't send anything longer w/o a query first, or it will be returned unread). WEIRD TALES is looking for well-written work that is unusual and original; works of the fantastic, stories that are unique and strange with a proclivity toward the dark side. A new take on traditional storylines is also welcome as long as it is different and distinctive. Think in terms of the exploration of the imagination and stories which push the boundaries.

11.15.09 UPDATE- Magazine appears to have folded, do not submit.

Thrilling Tales Quarterly is open to submissions by writers and artists. Our guidelines are as follows:

Fiction: Hero Pulp tales of up to 20,000 words. Query for longer material -- we will consider standard-length pulp novels (60K words), but primarily as serialized fiction or stand-alone book releases. We want tales that are true to the spirit of the pulps -- as such we prefer that they be set during the "pulp era" -- the 1930s. Our standards are perhaps a bit higher than those of the original pulp fiction magazines -- in general we'd prefer stories that are written in a more polished and professional manner than the original pulps, yet still maintaining the pacing, imaginative plots and excitement of the originals. We do have a certain number of "House Characters" -- characters which we will regularly feature, both classic and licensed. Stories featuring these characters will be assigned to writers that we're familiar with, so once you've gotten on board with an original story, we'll consider you for assigned work.

Please send a query only and you will receive a response in one month's time. Simultaneous submissions are ok as long as it is stated in the cover letter.

The New Yorker is a weekly magazine that publishes news stories, commentary, criticism, essays, fiction, satire, cartoons, and poetry for an educated, literate readership.

Welcomes submissions to many departments, including fiction, although volume precludes personal response. Be lively, original, not overly literary. Write to own interests, not to the perceived interests of the editor.

Although we do read all submissions, we cannot respond to them individually or return them. Except for Shouts & Murmurs and The Talk of the Town, we prefer to receive no more than two submissions per writer per year. We do not consider simultaneous submissions or material that has been previously published.

Submit queries via e-mail or regular post.

The Magazine of Speculative Poetry is looking for science fiction or fantasy poetry. Payment: 3 cents per word. Five dollar minimum, twenty-five dollar maximum.

If they buy your poem, they reserve First North American rights. All rights revert to the author(s) upon publication, except for permission to reprint in any "Best of" or compilation volume. Payment will be made for such publication. Poets receive a copy of the issue in which their poem(s) appears. Return time of 1 to 8 weeks. Usually 1 to 2 weeks.

No simultaneous submissions; we do not use reprints. Subscription: four issues for $19. Single issue $5.00. Both postage paid. Poets from countries other than the USA should indicate if they prefer payment in US currency or in US postage stamps and what denominations would be preferred.

What MSP wants: "I want more than just images. I want a poem to take me someplace I haven't been before. Have a fresh look at an old trope. I am more concerned with a good poem first, then a speculative poem."
