| Outreach Magazine | Updated November 21st, 2008 |
Outreach is a bimonthly magazine covering outreach. It is designed to inspire, challenge and equip churches and its leaders to reach out to their communities with the love of Jesus Christ. Having a passion for outreach is a good start, but that’s not enough. Freelance writers must be experienced professionals who understand our mission and editorial philosophy. Please don’t query us until you’ve studied at least one issue of Outreach. Outreach magazine is always on the lookout for ideas and stories, as well as experienced writers and interviewers. The magazine is divided into sections: FEATURES: 1200-2000 words. Pays $375-$500. Outreach magazine’s features run the gamut from profiles to trend pieces to how-to’s. All of our features answer the question: “What does this mean for me and my local church and the Church at large?” In large features, this question is answered through the collective use of stories, ideas, statistics and interviews with experts. Since stories inspire people to action, we rely heavily on storytelling and anecdotes. Most features in Outreach magazine require numerous interview sources. Be prepared to do several interviews to tell all sides of the story—from the pastor to the volunteer to the family helped by the church. Some of the subjects we’ve covered in features: church growth in America, mass evangelism’s effectiveness, community transformation, cultivating and growing a single adults ministry, reaching Muslims, using e-mail to advance your church’s outreach efforts, etc. PULSE: 200 words. Pays $100-$375. This is the “grazing” section at the front of the magazine, designed to help readers keep their “pulse” on what’s happening in the Church—from a story about a 50-member church feeding hungry children in its community to a parachurch organization that travels to college campuses, educating students about the dangers of pornography. This is “tight and bright” writing that tells an inspiring story and communicates a wealth of information in an extremely concise format. The tone is practical and inspirational. We are always on the lookout for Pulse stories. IDEA BANK: This section is very practical and offers innovative, transferable ideas and how-to’s that all churches can implement. In this section, we give readers step-by-step instructions for organizing and executing an outreach event or idea Some examples: a gas buydown in your community that offers gas at a lower price to motorists; an after-school tutoring program and job care center; a Thanksgiving dinner for internationals. If you have a story idea, please send a query letter along with your resume and clips. If your query or manuscript is seasonal or event-related, keep in mind that we’re on a three-month lead time. Query letter Submit a cover letter explaining your idea and how the article will be organized, resume, published writing samples (preferably feature articles) and a SASE (self-addressed, stamped envelope). Unsolicited manuscript Submit your cover letter, resume, typed manuscript, SASE and (if published previously) information showing where and when it appeared. send: Query or MS looking for: Article specifically: Religious/Inspirational |

| Our Sunday Visitor | Updated November 21st, 2008 |
A query — a solicitation or “pitch” to write a particular article on a particular topic and angle — can be sent to us via postal mail. Clearly state your objective, outline the expected article and commit to how quickly you can have it in. You might attach clips of your past work for us to review as well if you have not written for OSV previously. You may send a manuscript without an advance query via either e-mail or postal mail to the attention of OSV Editor. Include your name, mailing address, telephone number and e-mail address. Social Security Number is needed for U.S. citizens in case we purchase your article, but you can phone that in to us later if you have security concerns. Our Sunday Visitor, our award-winning flagship publication, is by far the largest-circulating national Catholic weekly newspaper in the United States. OSV serves as a kind of “defogging agent” — clarifying the confusion present in the mixed messages received amid the rapid changes in technology, shifting contemporary moral viewpoints and political rhetoric. This apostolate is summarized in our tagline as we strive to provide “Catholic Clarity in a Complex World.” OSV is looking for: News analysis — not merely news reporting — pertaining to the Catholic Church in the United States and throughout the world. Features linked to the current events and trends of the day. Faith-based articles that take advantage of the “catechetical moments” derived from the daily headlines and the liturgical year. Sound, reader-friendly, well-crafted presentation packages that engage and draw the reader more deeply into the text. Here’s what we generally are not looking for: Articles written in the first person. Long, academic or preachy commentaries. Features with no real link to Catholic faith or sensibilities. Straight news reporting, especially on strictly local events. Articles designed to publicize a future event. Short stories, whether fiction or non-fiction. Poetry. OSV's content is divided into several regular categories (please refer to the website for category specifics: NEWS ANALYSIS: Generally 950-1,100 words (including sidebars), but occasionally run as short as 500 words or as long as 2,000 words. IN FOCUS: In Focus sections comprise a package of articles totaling 3,000-4,000 words written by one or several authors. FAITH: The package, including sidebars, can reach 1,100 to 1,300 words. TRENDS: Here we look at the observed religious, cultural or statistical swings and provide context from a faith perspective. Aim for 600 to 750 words. FAMILY: Word count: 600 to 750 words. MEDIA: Analysis of trends in the entertainment and news industry, book and film reviews. 600-700 words. HERITAGE: 500 to 750 words. CONVERSATION: 500 to 1,200 words in their edited form. PROFILE: Word count: 500 to 750 words. ESSAY: Word count: 500 to 750 words. Entries should be tightly written, cleanly written, timely, objective, instructive and faithful. send: Query or MS looking for: Article specifically: Religious/Inspirational |

| Back Home In Kentucky | Updated November 21st, 2008 |
Back Home in Kentucky celebrates the spirit of the Commonwealth: the places, the people, the remarkable spirit, the memories, and the history. It is a “coffee-table” magazine reflecting a dynamic and contemporary Kentucky, rich in history, hospitality, and natural beauty. Back Home fosters interest and pride in Kentucky, entertaining and educating the reader. The magazine draws attention to the state’s little-known sites and events as well as its most popular and interesting places and events. Our mission is to amuse, educate, and to illustrate the pleasures of living in a very special state and to ensure that each perusal leaves the reader more knowledgeable and proud of Kentucky. We welcome queries and manuscripts on speculation that have a Kentucky connection and fall within these general areas: Kentucky history (Chronicles), Kentucky locations (Field Trip), interesting people and people with interesting jobs or hobbies (Profile), nostalgia (Memories), arts and crafts/crafts (Made In Kentucky), cookbooks by Kentucky author or group (In the Kitchen). Focus: Each issue focuses on a Kentucky “Destination,” which is the main feature of the issue and will be accompanied by a front cover photograph from the area of destination and from 2-6 pages of editorial copy (text and photos). The Destination piece is generally staff written or assigned. Field Trip: This is a mini-destination piece, featuring a place that perhaps is not as widely known but interesting for its historic significance, natural beauty, architecture, etc. These can be any size, from a one-page feature with photo, to a 2-4-page spread. Good photos are important to this piece. Kentucky Treasure: Generally a one- to two-page feature of an historic site, building, park, old-stand forest area, etc. Memories: A first person anecdotal feature of 2-3 pages in length. This feature could be accompanied by old family photos. Commonwealth Chronicle: A feature relating to Kentucky history. This could be about one individual, an historic place, event, or category (medicine, exploration, aviation). Length can be up to 4 pages. Photos and/or illustrations desirable. In the Kitchen: This is our recipe source and our opportunity to help a Kentucky group or author sell their cookbook. Send us a free sample along with brief information about the group or author, price of the cookbook, and how to order. We select about a dozen recipes for our “In the Kitchen” feature, and give How to Order information at the end. All orders for the cookbook go directly to the group/author. send: Query or MS looking for: Article specifically: Regional |
