![]() Must submit via EMAIL. We are open to articles on holistic health, alternative healing, green living, sustainable and local food, social responsibility, conscious business, the environment, spirituality and personal growth; in short, anything that deals with a progressive, healthy lifestyle. The important words to remember when writing for WLT are ‘information’ and‘narrative style.’ We strive to provide leading-edge editorial that is not only entertaining, but also directly usable by our readers—information that mainstream media often abridges, is unaware of or is unwilling to print. WLT’s content is largely local — issues, events and people in southern California — but we do publish some stories with a broader focus. In generic features (e.g. health-related), we use local sources for quotes and back-up information. WLT accepts up to three longer stories (800-1,100 words) per issue, and pay ranges from $150-200. In addition, we have a number of regular departments on our coverage topics, and these pay $75-125 depending on topic and experience. Out and About is our FOB section featuring short, newsy blurbs on our coverage topics. These are generally 200-400 words and pay $25-50 depending on length and topic. Behind the Scenes is a 750-word personal essay that often highlights a seminal moment or event in the life of the writer, and pays $100. If you have not written for us before, please be sure to include your bio and up to three published clips or links. Alternatively, you may submit a completed manuscript. If your article addresses the categories described above, your treatment of the issue, the timeliness of the article and the quality of your writing are the main keys to getting published. Submissions should be typed and double-spaced in AP style. Please attach an MS Word file, and also copy and paste your story in the message section of your email. Please do not send a PC-specific file as we may not be able to open it. Please suggest a Hed and Dek for your story. send: Query with Clips looking for: Article specifically: Lifestyle |

| Hemispheres | Updated June 23rd, 2010 |
![]() Hemispheres is a monthly inflight magazine that interprets "inflight" to be a mode of delivery rather than an editorial genre. As such, Hemispheres' task is to engage, intrigue, and entertain its primary readers—an international, culturally diverse group of affluent, educated professionals and executives who frequently travel for business and pleasure on United Airlines. The magazine offers a global perspective and a focus on topics that cross borders as often as the people reading the magazine. That places its emphasis on ideas, concepts, and culture rather than products. It presents that perspective in a fresh, artful, and sophisticated graphic environment. Keeping "global" in mind, they look for topics that reflect a modern appreciation of the world's cultures and environment. No "What I did (or am going to do) on a trip." Includes many columns and departments covering profiles of interesting people, geographical or city-specific trivia, business strategies, recreation, dining in various locations, collections, sports, shopping, science and technology, aviation, airport information, entertainment/show business, humor, quizzes, general travel, books, etc. Hemispheres increasingly requires writers of "destination" pieces or departments to "live whereof they write." Increasingly wants to hear from US, UK, or other English-speaking/writing journalists (business & travel) who reside outside the US in Europe, South America, Central America, and the Pacific Rim—all areas that United flies. Not looking for writers who aim at the inflight market. Hemispheres broke the fluffy mold of that tired domestic genre. Monthly readers are a global mix on the cutting edge of the global economy and culture. They don't need to have the world filtered by US writers. Hemispheres wants a Hong Kong restaurant writer to speak for that city's eateries, so English-speaking writers around the globe are needed. That's the "insider" story readers respect. Uses resident writers for many departments, but authoritative writers can roam in features. Covers the US, but with a global view: No "in this country" phraseology. "Too American" is a frequent complaint for queries. Uses UK English spellings in articles that speak from that tradition and specifies costs in local currency first before US dollars. All of the above serves the realization that today, "global" begins with respect for "local." That approach permits a wealth of ways to present culture, travel, and business for a wide readership. send: Query with Clips looking for: Article specifically: Travel/Outdoors |

| Utne | Updated November 20th, 2009 |
![]() Utne Reader and Utne.com are digests of independent ideas and alternative culture. Not right, not left, but forward thinking. We're most interested in creating a conversation about everything from the environment to the economy, politics to pop culture. Our editors glean this material for compelling, delightfully written stories, interviews, and cultural criticism, then edit and reprint the most essential. We accept four kinds of submissions: previously published articles (from independent sources) and query letters (regarding original ideas). Many of the articles in Utne Reader are reprinted from the hundreds of magazines, newsweeklies, newsletters, and literary journals we receive regularly, and we welcome previously published submissions. (Yes, this includes online sources.) We do not accept fiction or poetry. ARTICLES: Our Gleanings department, which features eclectic, often personal, occasionally humorous pieces, traditionally offers the best reprint odds. Most “gleanings” fall between 800 and 1,800 words. Emerging Ideas, which covers social, political, and cultural developments, reprints brief items (150-350 words) as well as short-format articles (generally no longer than 800 words). The Mindful Living department showcases information about healthy, reflective, productive lives, and also reprints brief items and short-format articles. Our Mixed Media department reprints a wide scope of arts features, but does not reprint music, film, or book reviews. You are also welcome to submit feature articles and essays. As a digest of the independent press, our features reflect the stories we’re reading and trends we’re spotting in our periodical library. This means we don’t have a traditional editorial calendar, and can’t tell you what we’re planning in advance—but we always have space available for that perfect feature submission. Features generally run between 1,000 and 3,750 words. Let us know where and when the article originally appeared. QUERIES: While we do not accept unpublished manuscripts, we’re happy to read your query letter. Draw us in, but tell us what your story idea is—quickly. Let us know why Utne Reader is the right venue for your story, and why you’re qualified to write this piece. Don’t forget to pitch shorter pieces; many times we’ll try out a new writer with a 125-600 word assignment. NOTE: BE SURE TO MANUALLY CHANGE THE CONTACT TO "QUERIES" WHEN YOU SUBMIT A QUERY. send: Query or MS looking for: Article |

| Traces of Indiana and Midwestern History | Updated November 20th, 2009 |
![]() Traces of Indiana and Midwestern History is a quarterly magazine on Indiana history. Conceived as a vehicle to bring to the public good narrative and analytical history about Indiana in its broader contexts of region and nation, Traces explores the lives of artists, writers, performers, soldiers, politicians, entrepreneurs, homemakers, reformers, and naturalists. It has traced the impact of Hoosiers on the nation and the world. In this vein, the editors seek nonfiction articles that are solidly researched, attractively written, and amenable to illustration, and they encourage scholars, journalists, and freelance writers to contribute to the magazine. Freelancers should be aware of prerequisites for writing history for a broad audience. Should have some awareness of this magazine and other magazines of this type published by Midwestern historical societies. Preference is given to subjects with an Indiana connection and authors who are familiar with Traces. Quality of potential illustration is also important. Buys 20 mss/year. Send complete manuscript. send: Complete MS looking for: Article specifically: Regional |
