True West magazine, published 10 times/year, features articles and departments that tie the history of the American West (between 1800 and 1930) to the modern Western lifestyle through enticing narrative and intelligent analyses. True West publishes articles on Western travel, collectibles, artists, movies, apparel, firearms and Old West characters, and reviews Western-related movies and books (fiction, nonfiction and children's books).

Some True West features and most department articles that are not written in-house are assigned. Generally, the lead features in each issue relate to a specific topic, which is set by the magazine's editorial staff.

Writers are encouraged to keep their ears to the ground and inform True West about revelations concerning Old West icons and historic events and places. A freelancer is most likely to break in by submitting thoroughly researched, lively prose on relatively obscure topics or by being assigned to write for a department. First-person accounts rarely fill needs. Historical accuracy and strict adherence to the facts are essential. Much prefer material based on primary sources and should not be based mainly on secondary sources. Art is also a huge selling point.

Buys 30 features/year; 30 short mss/year.

You may submit via e-mail or regular mail.
