For novels, authors should send in about three chapters (or up to 30 pages) and a synopsis or outline of the rest of the book. They always appreciate a brief bio in your cover letter. Please keep in mind that they receive many unsolicited manuscripts, and that we do read all manuscripts. For this reason, they will not send out a response unless interested in publication. Therefore, if an author has not heard from them within eight to nine months of submitting a manuscript, it means there is no interest. Authors may submit to other publishers simultaneously.

Picture books: Story text need only be presented in a typed and double-spaced manuscript. Given this format, most picture book manuscripts should be less than eight pages.

Other formats—such as storyboards, dummy books, layout suggestions, and illustration ideas—are unnecessary. Please do not include them unless you are a professional artist.

Illustrations are not needed. When we publish a manuscript, we prefer to choose an artist whose style we feel best complements the story.

Novels: We prefer that you send a query letter with three sample chapters first. We publish very few novels, so please bear in mind that the competition is particularly fierce. At this time, we are not seeking manuscripts or writers for the Boxcar Children® Mysteries series.

Prometheus accepts submissions from both authors and literary agents. Before sending any materials, it is always best to submit a letter of inquiry that introduces the topic; briefly outlines the author's project; and discusses relevant competing works, the potential market, the availability of the complete manuscript (or its likely completion date), and the manuscript's (tentative) length. A copy of the author's vita/resume with publishing history should accompany your inquiry.

Letters of inquiry submitted via e-mail are accepted provided there are no attached files. We do not accept e-mailed proposals. All proposals must be sent via regular mail. Please allow 4 weeks for review of an inquiry, 6 to 8 weeks for review of a proposal, and 10 to 14 weeks for review of partial or complete manuscripts.
